Steinheim - 1999

Steinheim, Germany, August 11, 1999

Here are some photos from the eclipse in Steinheim, Germany on August 11, 1999.  Bernd B. and family took care of all the local organization and they did a spectacular job! Steinheim is the site of an ancient meteor impact. We climbed to the top of the hill at the center of the meteor crater to experience for the eclipse. From there we had a beautiful panaromaic view of the crater rim. Unforturnately the weatherman decided to rain on our parade quite literally. We had heavy overcast skies and intermittent showers the entire day of the eclipse. Although we couldn’t see the sun directly, we got to experience the eclipse indirectly as it got pitch black during totality. After the eclipse, Bernd took us on a tour of the Roman ruins marking the Limnes, the furthest extent of the Roman empire in that region. Too bad the baths were no longer taking guests, because judging from the extent of the remains, they would surely have been a perfect ending for our day.
